Shatzkin's Knish Store

The original Shatzkin's knish store at the S/E corner of 31st Street and Surf Avenue. Hard to determine but I believe that the store was there in the early 40s -- maybe earlier. I heard that it was destroyed in a fire in April 1945 and then moved to a boardwalk store around 30th - 31st St.

In the early 1960s Shatzkin's  migrated to the old Child's building on the boardwalk at the 21st St corner.    I remember buying knishes there and watching the old Jewish women making them on long tables in the back; not sure when this location closed.  It then moved to the S/W corner of 15th Street and Surf Avenue.

I recall it there in the 1970s.  I believe it was gone by circa 1980.  And that's the end of Shatzkin's in Coney Island.

By the way, Mrs Shatzkin is mentioned in Joseph Heller's book, " Now and Then: From Coney Island to Here."  Heller recalls her walking around the west end streets in C.I. selling knishes out of a big bag.  The days before the store, I guess.  Great book, have you read it?
