"The American  Museum  of  Public  Recreation"

was established at Coney Island in 1929.

It's creation was very much the work of one man,  William F. Mangels,

a ride inventor & manufacturer whose factory was located in Coney Island .

In 1955 when he was 89 years old,  William F. Mangels sold his museum collection in the hopes that others would continue to exhibit for the public these objects that told the history of the amusement business.
