It's creation was very much the work of one man, William F. Mangels,
a ride inventor & manufacturer whose factory was located in Coney Island .

In 1906 Mangels patented his Tickler Ride and in 1915 The Whip.

Other important inventions by Mangels included a 1901 patent he shared with W.S. Smith for a jumping device with carousel animals.

In 1955 when he was 89 years old, William F. Mangels sold his museum collection in the hopes that others would continue to exhibit for the public these objects that told the history of the amusement business.
